Awesome light
Wasn't sure what to expect, but this thing really lights it up. Too bright? No way. If you need a light, then you want light and this thing will provide. Well built quality product. Rail mount it on an AR and you're ready to see whatever you need to, inside or out. View through scope is lit up like the middle of the day @ 50 to 100 yards. Throws a good concentrated beam with a just right amount of wash. Can't imagine the other higher dollar flashlights being any brighter or better built than this one.
Streamlight Quality
Pros: 1) High quality, heavy duty construction. 2) Clear and focused beam--very bright (1100 lumens) on high output setting and wide, even coverage. 3) Great for outdoor use. Cons: 1) Loves batteries--goes through them very quickly when using the high output setting. 2) Large and heavy. 3) Too bright for indoor use in most situations. 4) Probably better suited to utility or hunting use rather than a self-defense role.
Light up the night!
My first impression of this flashlight is quality. The ProTac HL3 is definitely bright, has a nice centrally focused portion to the beam, and a larger peripheral portion that lights up a generous area. The distance that the beam is cast is really impressive. The flashlight comes factory programmed to run at full power, strobe, and low. Changing between modes of operation is learned easily after spending some time with the flashlight. It is programmable for different modes as well. While this light might be somewhat large to carry as a purely tactical light, it could be. I believe the ProTac HL3 really shines as a highly portable searchlight and would be great in a vehicle, boat, or as I intend to use it for home and property protection. I have other flashlights from Surefire and Streamlight, and both are quality products. I expect the ProTac HL3 will provide good service. Be sure to remove the piece of paper, which identifies which batteries Streamlight recommends before installing the batteries.

Amazingly powerful light, but burns thru expensive batteries
This is a great flashlight and is amazingly bright. I bought the light to use for work at my armed security job. This light has been my favorite out of all the handheld flashlights I have purchased over the years. It is reliable, durable, and easy to use. The ProTac HL 3 uses three 123A lithium batteries. The batteries seem to last anywhere between 2-3 weeks of heavy use to 1-2 months of light to moderate use on the job. I would highly recommend this flashlight to anyone who needs very bright light and must have a dependable light source. Just be prepared to spend a lot of money on batteries. I would suggest purchasing the rechargeable batteries for this light if you are going to be using this flashlight with any amount of regularity like I have been, such as law enforcement officers, security officers, or others who need a bright, reliable light source on a regular basis. Use the rechargeables and carry spare 123A batteries with you on your person for emergencies.
The streamlight protac hl3 is a Great light
I already have the two cell versions, at 600 lumens, and was happy with that, so I thought I'd try this one for nearly double the power, at 1100 lumens. Well, it is brighter, but I gave up the "pocketability" and the easy one-hand thumb- on- tailcap switch method of use. But I love the bright center spot, first press full power right out of the package feature, and ease of moving through to the strobe and low settings, just like the 600-lumen model. Both are spectacular in totally dark conditions but also excellent in "street light" conditions, where an attacker may not be disadvantaged with a blast from a 50 lumen light. Streamlight will be there for me if I ever have a problem, I suspect. Not true of the hardware store flashlight manufacturers. I also like that Streamlight puts serial numbers on these things in case of loss or theft.
Don't stick batteries
There is a warning sticker down in the battery tube. If you ignore it without removing it first and dropping batteries down on top of it, you're likely going to have a problem getting it out and maybe a stuck battery. FYI If you seek to mess up someone's night vision, this is the one.
So bright, it's actually TOO bright.
I own handheld and gun lights from Streamlight and Surefire since my Cop days. Bought 2 of these 1100 Lumen blasters. I thought I'd use one for bedside use and the other for outside (bears) at night. The problem I found is if you bump the tailcap indoors, you just blinded yourself too 'cause EVERYTHING in the room gets lit up! Went back to 300 Lumens SureFire for bump-in-the-night stuff. I can't beat 1100 L. for outdoors, though! Quality is excellent, of course.
