Scout Scope on All Purpose Rifle
I bought this scope and matching low-profile mounts for a general-purpose rifle, inspired by Jeff Cooper. I mounted the scope in a forward position on my rifle, and it looks slim and clean, allowing the rifle to fit into most standard cases and bags. The optic is crystal clear, and the scope works well for distances between 100 to 300 yards, making it ideal for hunting at those distances. However, the design of the scope with the Burris mounts has a blind spot of approximately 20 feet at 100 yards around the perimeter, even when shooting with both eyes open. This blind spot can be a hindrance for shooting at distances closer than 100 yards. As a result, this scope is not practical for use on a defensive rifle around the homestead or on a confrontation rifle for law enforcement.
great scout scope
After my negative experience with the Leupold scope, which lacked adjustable focus, I wanted to share my positive experience with the Burris scope. Although the Burris scope has adjustable focus with a lockring, I hardly needed to adjust it at all, whereas the Leupold was blurry and unusable for me. Perhaps I just had a bad one? Regardless, I was able to quickly zero the Burris on my Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle, and it has handled .308 shock without issue so far. I expect it will perform well on my Mini-14 6.8SPC with Ultimak rail as well. I should also note that the Warne 200LM QD rings work well in this application and return to zero nicely. My recommendation is to go with the Burris scope.
Good Scout scope for money,
I purchased this scope for my lightweight Ruger 1022 takedown build, and I also looked at the Leopold VXII 2.5x and Weaver 4X scout scopes. The Burris scope was the best fit for my build for three reasons: the longer and more forgiving eye relief (an extra 3 to 4 inches), lighter weight, and shorter length. My build used a Volquartson Light Carbon Fiber bull barrel with a cantilevered mount on the barrel and a Magpul X22 backpacker stock. By reversing the mount on the barrel, I was able to keep the takedown length of the Ruger Magpul X22 combination to under 20 inches, with the scope mounted directly over the barrel. Because the scope was mounted that far forward, the extra eye relief of the Burris scope was necessary, and mounting the scope to the barrel eliminated any variations in zero when the Ruger was taken apart and reassembled. The Burris scope's cons are that its glass is good but not great, the field of view is less than the other two scopes, and the turret adjustments are not very positive in feel. Care must be taken when making adjustments, as they are somewhat "soft" and imprecise. However, for my purposes, the glass and field of view of the Burris scope are more than enough for a 22LR rifle that will rarely be used for shots over 100 yards. The turret adjustments are adequate, and the scope is sighted in for 50 yards, so minimal corrections are needed for actual use. At under $300, the Burris scope is the best option of the three if you need longer, forgiving eye relief, compact length, and low weight. If you need better glass and a brighter scope, go with the Leopold. If you need more magnification and still want a lightweight, compact scope, go with the Weaver. I hope this review helps, and thanks for reading.
Excellent Scout Scope!
As my eyesight has started to decline with age, I realized it was time to upgrade my Weaver 4X scout scope. Its thin, target-style reticle was becoming difficult to see in low light, and I also wanted a lower magnification for my 150-yard and under rifle. I found the perfect replacement in this Burris scope, which performs like a champ on my Marlin 444P Outfitter. The scope's smaller size complements the stubby little rifle well. I hadn't owned a Burris scope in nearly 20 years, so I was amazed when I looked through it for the first time. The scope is incredibly bright and clear, and its heavy reticle is highly visible even in low light. Zeroing in was easy, and within just 10 rounds, I was shooting the usual 2" groups at 100 yards, but this time under much more favorable conditions than before. I highly recommend this scope to anyone seeking a high-quality option that performs well in low light conditions. The Burris is an excellent choice, and I was truly impressed by it after not using a Burris scope for almost two decades.
Excellent Scout Scope!
As my eyesight has started to decline with age, I knew it was time to upgrade from my Weaver 4X scout scope. Its thin, target-style reticle was becoming difficult to see in low light, and I wanted a lower magnification for my 150-yard and under rifle. This Burris scope turned out to be the perfect solution for me. It's compact size pairs well with my Marlin 444P Outfitter, and I was pleasantly surprised by how bright and clear the scope is. Its heavy reticle is easy to see in low light conditions. Zeroing in was a breeze, and within just 10 rounds, I was shooting the usual 2" groups at 100 yards, but this time under much more favorable conditions than before. I highly recommend this scope to anyone looking for a high-quality option that performs well in low light conditions. The Burris is a fantastic choice, and I haven't been this impressed with a scope in nearly 20 years.
Solid and Light
If you're looking to build your own version of Col. Cooper's Scout Rifle concept, then this scope is a solid choice. Its fixed power design makes it lightweight and simple, and being a Burris product means it's nearly indestructible with a lifetime replacement warranty in case it does break. From a user perspective, the scope is easy to aim, and the heavy reticle is highly visible in most weather conditions (though it may be more difficult to see in low light). There are no fancy BDC dots or other features, but once you master this scope, you won't miss any of that extra complexity. As the saying goes, "be wary of the man with only one gun, for he likely knows how to use it," and this scope fits that philosophy perfectly.
Great scope for a Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle
In search of an Intermediate Eye Relief scope to mount on my new Ruger Scout Rifle, I considered both Burris and Leopold. Ultimately, I chose this one for its shorter length, slightly higher magnification, and lower price. The scope works great on the Ruger, and I highly recommend it for its quality and value.
Great Scope!
A few months ago, I purchased and mounted this scope. At the range, it zeroed in quickly. Soon after, I went hog hunting and successfully bagged one from about 150 yards with spot-on accuracy. While I haven't used it long enough to give a comprehensive review, my initial impression is that it's a fantastic scope. The eye relief is good, and acquiring a clear sight picture is easy. I have it mounted on my Ruger Scout using Medium Warne Scope Mounts.
Perfect for my Marlin 1895 45-70
Fed up with the regular rifle scope on my Marlin 1895 causing facial injury while shooting heavier loads, I converted it into a scout rifle. I chose this scope, and it is the perfect fit. To mount the scope, I used the XS Sight Systems Lever Rail with ghost ring sights, and attached it using Warne Quick Detach Weaver Base Mounts (low) placed all the way forward. The setup has worked well, even under extreme conditions, and the scope has maintained its zero. I no longer have to worry about the scope injuring me. If you're interested in adding Uncle Mike's Flip-Up Scope Caps, you'll need a size 3 eyepiece and a size 4 objective. These fit perfectly with the low scope mounts on the XS Rail.
5.0 out of 5 stars Owner of 3 Burris Scout Scopes in 2.75X - That Says It ALL!!!!
I've purchased three 2.75X Burris Scout Scopes, and all of them have lived up to my expectations. Two of them are mounted forward on SKS's, and the other is on a Polish M44 Mosin Nagant chambered in 7.62 X 54R. The 2.75X magnification is perfect for what I need those rifles to accomplish. Zeroing them in was a breeze, and they have remained on target even after hundreds of rounds. Despite experiencing heavy recoil from my Mosin Nagant (and my shoulder), the scope has held up remarkably well. For the price, Burris offers an excellent value. If you're searching for a scout scope or an extended eye relief scope, I highly recommend choosing Burris.
Solid Scout Scope
The Burris Scout Scope is a solid optic that delivers on its advertised eye relief range of 8.5”-14”. What surprised me was the scope's ability to allow a good amount of light despite its small diameter. Its low-frills reticle is perfect for short to medium range targets, but it might not be ideal for anything beyond 300 yards, which is, in fact, the theoretical limit of a scout rifle. However, my only complaint is that the anti-glare treatment appears to be ineffective under indoor, artificial lighting conditions.
Love the Scout Rifle Concept
I mounted the scope on my Ruger GSR .308 using 1" Warne QD Low rings. Despite using ghost ring sights, which typically obstruct the view, the low rings did not cause any issues. As someone who wears glasses, I found the focus feature to be extremely helpful. Initially, I was considering the Leupold 2.5x, but decided against it after reading reviews from people with glasses who experienced blurry and thin reticles. Living in Western Washington, I don't often encounter opportunities for 300+ yard shots due to the abundance of trees and underbrush. However, I tested the scope by shooting targets at 25 yards and a 9" steel plate at 150 yards while standing with a Galco Ching Sling. Compared to traditional rear-mounted scopes, the Ching Sling allowed for much faster target sighting. I was able to quickly adapt to shooting with both eyes open, swiftly pivoting the rifle from the low ready position with my elbow in the sling and nailing the target. Overall, I am absolutely thrilled with this scope and rifle combo, as well as the Scout Rifle concept. Thanks to the fast target acquisition this setup provides, I highly recommend this scope to anyone on the fence about purchasing it. Thank you for taking the time to read my review.
