good product if you're handy
I purchased this item to install on my Savage Axis 308, but initially, it was not long enough to fit. However, I noticed that the screw holes were the correct distance apart, so I sawed it in half to make a double base. It worked perfectly, and since most Savage Axis bases are two-piece anyway, it was a great solution if you're handy. However, if you're not experienced with modifying equipment, this product might not be for you. Additionally, I haven't come across a scope yet that requires mounting to the center of the receiver, so the gap between the bases is not a significant issue.
Great buy
I installed this item on a Savage 11 trophy hunter xp short action using the screws that came with the rifle, but as others have noted, the included screws were too long. Despite this minor issue, the item looks great and is of good quality. It is also priced much more affordably than the $90 picatinny rails. I also purchased the weaver tactical rings with four bolts, and the combination looks fantastic.
Well manufactured
The mount fit my Savage 12 rifle perfectly, and I added Weaver 30mm six hole tactical rings to it. However, I encountered an issue where two of the screws were too long for the rifle. The holes above the chamber require screws that are half the length of the other screws. When I tightened the screws down, one of them wouldn't go flush, while the other had actually poked into the bolt chamber just enough to prevent the bolt from locking. It took me 20 frustrating minutes to realize this was the problem, as the trigger still engaged. I had to remove the screw in question, and after doing so, the bolt cycled perfectly. Now, I have to go to a hardware store to find replacement 10c screws of the appropriate length. It would be better if the manufacturer included shorter screws to avoid this issue altogether.
Savage Trophy Hunter Model 11 (Left hand) short action, 22-250.
Although this item is designed for a right hand action, it can still be used on a left handed action, with the only difference being a slight relief for the ejector port. However, there isn't much practical benefit to this other than eliminating a 90 degree edge where a finger might accidentally go. When used on a left hand action, it will protrude about 1/32" forward of the rear of the receiver and hang over the recoil lug, rather than being flush with both ends of the receiver. This detail is not shown in the pictures or described in the product description. Based on other reviews and a comparison with the screws that came with my Savage Trophy Hunter (model 11) Short action, I didn't even attempt to use the screws that came with the item.
