Great red dot!
I own both the Holosun 507c and this model, and I must say, I can't imagine going back to a red dot that requires manual turning on and off. The shake awake feature on these sights is incredibly reliable, eliminating the need to remember to activate the red dot. The 2 MOA dot size is ideal, allowing for quick acquisition as it co-witnesses perfectly with my front sight. The addition of a solar panel provides an extra layer of assurance for the already long-lasting battery. It's also convenient that it fits on a standard RMR mount, which seems to be a common feature in most slides nowadays. While this model is excellent for handguns, I have a preference for the 507c on my ARs, mainly because it offers both a round circle and the dot reticles.
Works Well
I initially bought a Holosun 407c for my Ruger MkII but faced issues with the base plate. While resolving this, I temporarily mounted it on my Marlin 39A's scope rail using the included Picatinny base for night-time varmint control. Though it looked odd on a lever-gun, it performed so well that it's still on the Marlin. I then got another 407c, an X2 version, for the Ruger, using an EGW baseplate (#49521). This second unit didn't come with a Picatinny base, but that wasn't an issue. Both units have been reliable, maintaining accuracy despite being jostled around. I appreciate the auto-on feature and the side-accessible battery. The auto-intensity feature is great on the handgun in daylight, but on the Marlin in low light, I prefer using the manual setting at the lowest intensity. The optics are clear, and the red dot is bright and visible. I prefer the buttons on the V2 version over the X2; they're vertical, larger, and easier to use, whereas the X2's horizontal buttons are smaller and harder to press simultaneously. Both units are compatible with Trijicon RMR but didn't come with covers. I tried a Scopecoat RMR boot, which didn't fit, but a soft rubber cover from dreamplastics.com works well.
Perfect
I own both the Holosun 407 and 507 and am very pleased with them. The clarity of the glass stands out compared to other brands, and the convenience of changing the battery without having to remove the optic is a significant plus. The auto shutoff feature helps conserve battery life, and the solar functionality is an impressive addition. In terms of durability, it matches its competitors, and I particularly like the shape and size of the window. Going forward, I plan to continue using the 407, as I don't utilize the additional reticle options offered by the 507, making it an unnecessary extra expense for my needs.
